BIRDOFAFEATHER P61, aka John Wayne, is a 2015 sorrel AQHA gelding that stands 15 hands and about 1100 pounds. He is by When The Eagle Flys (by One Famous Eagle, LTE 1.3+ million) and out of Hot Lil Pistol L 1 (by Texas Playgun). John Wayne carries the famous pick & shovel brand on his hip. He is paid into the Riata Buckle, under his sire, When The Eagle Flys.
John Wayne is a started head horse with a huge motor. He can run, has an awesome move in the corner, and is quick to face. He’s calm and collected in the box and scores good. John Wayne is very athletic and would excel in other disciplines as well. He is ready for someone to take him and finish him the way they want. He follows a cow well and has been ranched on in the past. John Wayne has a nice smooth gait and can go for miles if needed. John Wayne is the kind of horse that’s needs a job.
He has been lightly started on the heel side but still needs more work. He can get hot if you rope too many fast cows in a row, due to his big motor, but if you rope good medium practice cattle, he will stay calm and in your hand. I have hauled him to a couple of ropings, but he is still green and needs those finishing touches.
My favorite thing about John Wayne is how correctly he uses his hind end when you get ahold of a steer. His quick feet and strong hip allows the header to get the steer legal fast! I wouldn’t recommend John Wayne for a beginner rider, as he needs someone looking for a horse with speed, quick feet and ready to give him a job. He’d be a good fit for a higher numbered roper that can finish him out as well.
John Wayne is up to date on vaccinations and teeth were floated in May 2023. He stands good for the farrier, loads and unloads from the trailer well, and is gentle to be around.
