We are proud to present GWhizItsAJak, affectionately known as “Duke,” a 2019 AQHA 14.2+ hand palomino gelding. We have owned him for almost two years and have completed every inch of the training on him. We got Duke in the summer of his 3-year-old year and started him that fall. He’s a testament to our program and what we strive to provide for the public. Duke is sired by Step It Up Jak, earner of around $4400 and a son of the infamous Wimpys Little Step (NRHA $9 million sire), and out of a daughter of the legendary Topsail Whiz.

Duke is trained in all of the reining maneuvers including cute spins and a flying lead change. He’s just been very lightly shown, but in his few outings brought home the win in the ranch reining each time. Duke also possesses the beautiful gaits and transitions necessary for the ranch riding classes. He stays collected and smooth through his transitions and keenly navigates his way through the patterns. In his limited outings, he also managed to place well in the ranch riding classes. He’s extremely broke and soft in the face, shoulders, ribs, and hips, making him a user-friendly mount for a variety of riders.

Don’t let Duke’s potential in the show pen fool you; he’s also a useful citizen on the ranch. He has covered many miles outside, checked fence, gathered and sorted cattle, and drug calves to the branding fire. Outside, Duke has a ground-covering trot while maintaining a low-headed frame and an ambitious attitude. He has also tracked slow cattle in the arena, and we feel as though he has all the makings of a top notch heel horse if someone wanted to take him that route.

He will drag a log (or our daughter in a sled in the snow), open gates, and move over to be mounted from any object. We have used him to pony colts from and he is always solid for that chore. Duke does fine with time off. He is easy to catch, load/unload, bathe, clip, and shoe. He’s a barn favorite with his pleasant personality and gorgeous dappled palomino color. He is sound and sane! For the past year and a half Duke has been my main mount. He’s easy to train, stays agreeable, and learns faster than any horse I’ve ever seen. With a shift in our program to focus more on 2- and 3-year-olds, I have decided it’s time for someone else to take Duke down the road, season him, and make him the horse of their dreams. It will be hard to see him go!
